Catholics in the US have swung dramatically against President Biden in recent years, now boasting a significant statistical break towards his GOP challenger.

Pew Research released a report on Apr 30 exploring support for presidential candidates sorted by religious affiliation.

The poll found that 55% of Catholics support or lean towards supporting former President Donald Trump in a head-to-head against Biden.

Conversely, only 43% of Catholics support Biden in the same one-on-one pairing.

The 12% margin of support for Trump marks a significant shift from 2020 when he held an extremely narrow lead—50% to 49%.

Biden currently leads among Hispanic Catholics with a narrow 49%-47% split, but the close contest marks a major shift rightward for the demographic.

According to survey data released by the Pew Research Center, incumbent US President Joe Biden, a Catholic, is battling a high unfavorability rating among his fellow Catholics.

According to the data, neither Biden nor his Republican rival, former president Donald Trump, are viewed favourably by most Catholics surveyed, but Biden is the more unpopular of the two.

The findings were part of a presentation on "Religion and Politics Ahead of the US Elections" by Pew's associate director of research, Greg Smith, at the 2024 annual conference of the Religion News Association, which concluded over the weekend.

Included in the data provided by Smith, Pew's late February survey of 12,000 US adults found that only 35% of Catholics hold a favourable view of Biden, while 64% have an unfavourable view of the incumbent president.

Evangelical Christian leaders are promising to pour millions of dollars into President Donald Trump's reelection campaign. While the politician has continually acted decidedly not Christ-like while in office, his willingness to enact their social agenda in exchange for campaign dollars and votes has won him their continued backing.

The Faith and Freedom Coalition has announced they will go all-in for the President, according to The Hill. They claim they will register a million conservative Christian voters and mobilize an army 30 million people nationwide.

"Trump's support among Christian voters is at an absolute fever pitch right now," Lance Lemmonds, the group's communications director said. The group is led by anti-abortion extremist Ralph Reed, who has turned his gaze on LGBTQ rights as a more lucrative cash cow. Read more

Whatever happened to American Christians' concerns over Mitt Romney's Mormon faith?

Like concerns about Romney's conservatism and pro-life record, theological issues have been brushed aside in anticipation of November's election.

According to Tony Perkins from the Family Research Council, 'growing enthusiasm' for Romney's campaign has much to do with the Obama administration's support for same-sex marriage and his Contraceptive Mandate, which forces religiously affiliated organisations such as hospitals and universities to include coverage for contraceptives in their health insurance plans. Forget the Mormon moment. The religious group that seems to be figuring most prominently in the presidential election right now is the Roman Catholic Church.

With Mitt Romney's recent choice of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as running mate, this campaign is the first in which Catholics are on both major party tickets. Vice President Joe Biden and Ryan are lifelong Catholics who attend Mass regularly and credit the church with shaping their views.

At the same time, New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan plans a prime-time appearance next week by giving the benediction at the Republican National Convention after Romney becomes the first Mormon presidential nominee from a major political party. Read more
