Providence St Joseph Hospital and the California Attorney General's office have reached a temporary agreement in a case alleging the Catholic-owned hospital in Humboldt County violated multiple state laws by denying emergency abortion care to pregnant patients.

Last month, Attorney General Rob Bonta sued Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, alleging it illegally refused to provide emergency abortion care to a woman who was 15 weeks pregnant and haemorrhaging.

According to the stipulated agreement released tonight, St Joseph agrees to fully comply with the state's Emergency Services Law, which prohibits hospitals from denying patients emergency care.

The hospital will allow physicians to terminate a patient's pregnancy if not doing so would seriously risk the patient's health.

A federal judge in late June blocked a law in Indiana set to take effect July 1, which would have required doctors to inform women procuring medical abortion that it is possible for the effects of the first drug in the regimen to be reversed.

In a lawsuit filed May 18 in the US District Court in Indianapolis, several pro-abortion advocacy groups, including Planned Parenthood, had asked a judge to block the law, which Gov Eric Holcomb signed into law in April.

US District Judge James Patrick Hanlon issued a temporary injunction while legal challenges to the law play out. He ruled that the state had not yet proven the effectiveness of the reversal process, and that the law could violate free speech rights of abortionists.

Bishop Robert Barron, auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles and head of Word on Fire ministries, called out Catholic Democratic lawmakers for claiming dialogue with the US bishops over abortion and the reception of Communion is the best way forward in the Eucharist controversy.

Barron cited a reticence on the part of Democrats to modify even the most extreme pro-abortion positions.

The article, titled "Bishop: Will Catholic Dems support protections for babies who survive abortion?", was published in the New York Post on June 28, 2021.

The bishop noted that despite his family's deep Democratic political background, he struggles "with abortion policy, where the party has lately staked out an especially extreme position."
