Vatican issues stamp to mark Mother Teresa's canonisation... Read more]]> The Vatican has released a special stamp to commemorate Mother Teresa of Kolkata's canonisation on September 4.

The 95-cent stamp features a wrinkled but radiant Mother Teresa smiling in her blue-trimmed, white sari.

Overlaid on the design by Patrizio Daniele is another image of her holding the hand of a small child.

"Frail but equally determined in her vocation, Mother Teresa loved God and the church with great strength, simplicity and extraordinary humility, glorifying with her life the dignity of a most humble service," said the brochure announcing the stamp's release.

The Vatican Philatelic and Numismatic Office announced the stamp's release Aug. 5 and distributed initial images of it.

It will print and sell a maximum of 150,000 sheets of 10 stamps each.

It will be released Sept. 2, two days before Pope Francis officially declares her a saint.

The Vatican post office is considering a special postmark for the day of the beatification.

Other stamps feature stained glass windows from St Mark's Church, Carterton, St Aidan's Church, Remuera, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell and the Christchurch Hospital Nurses' Memorial Chapel.

Since 1960, the New Zealand Post Office has released special Christmas stamp issues for the Christmas postal season.

At first there was only one stamp in the Christmas issues, but from 1970 on Christmas issues have contained three to eight stamps.

There has been some criticism, at times, from Christian organisations when the stamps have not depicted religious themes.

In 2008 the 50c stamp featured a sheep wearing jandels and the $2.50 stamp depicted a Kiwi with a santa hat on.

In 2013 all the stamps were themed on families celebrating Christmas in different ways.

The Vatican's Philatelic and Numismatic Office, which sells commemorative coins and stamps featuring popes, saints and the like, is offering a special 20-euro ($NZ31.50) stamp and certificate package to help offset a recession-induced drop in corporate sponsors for the project.
