First Catholic parish of Southland celebrates 150 years... Read more]]> Planning is under way for the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the first Catholic parish in Southland.

The sesquicentennial will be marked at Labour Weekend, the anniversary of when the first Catholic church was opened in the south, with mass to be said in a little church in Clyde St.

From that mother church, St Mary's, other churches have been built and parishes established all over the south.

In more recent times, some parishes have come together.

Western Southland parish priest Father Vaughan Leslie ministers to congregations in Riverton, Otautau, Nightcaps and Tuatapere, travelling between the four churches for weekday and Sunday masses. Continue reading
