A recently published report on pupil exclusions shows Maori and Pasifika boys in lower decile schools are the group worst affected.

The Ministry of Education report on expulsion shows there was a clear link between the socio-economic mixes of schools and the removal rates. "Students from the lowest quintile schools are five times more likely to be excluded than students in the highest group," the report said.

The report found that last year schools expelled more Pasifika students than any other group and stood down more Maori students than any other group.

It found the most prevalent reasons for expulsion and exclusion were drugs, continual disobedience, and physical assault on other students.

Secondary Principals' Association of New Zealand president Patrick Walsh said it was good to see stand-down and suspension rates decrease, but boys and Maori leading the statistics was a concern.

Fiva Faalau, who graduated with a PhD from Massey University's Albany campus last week, says while her study of 45 Samoan teenagers revealed diverse family structures and parenting styles, some parents need to be more understanding of the needs of young people.

This means balancing the tradition of parental control and protectiveness with teen desire for freedom and trust - changes she says are essential to curb rising suicide, self-harm and alcohol abuse among Pasifika youth.

Thirty Pacific-based youth workers from Tonga, Samoa and Fiji graduated with Certificates and Diplomas from a Regional Pasifika Youth Development Programme, during a graduation ceremony in Nuku'alofa, on August 10.

"Ola Fou", meaning "new life" is a project of the Youth Cultures and Community Trust, a charitable organization registered in New Zealand.

The course is funded by NZAid to assist 16 youth workers from Tonga, eight from Fiji and six from Samoa to attend a series of block courses over 15 months to complete qualifications at the Certificate and Diploma level.

It is aimed at supporting Pacific-based youth workers to develop their leadership skills and gain qualifications to work with young people in their individual communities.
