Protests erupted in the city of Naples in an attempt to prevent the Catholic Church from gaining control over the jewels of its patron saint, San Gennaro or Saint Januarius.

"We're protecting a centuries-old institution, we will not stand for interference from either the church or the government," said Paolo Jorio, director of the San Gennaro museum.

The collection of gold jewellery, precious stones, headdresses, and silver busts, which are reportedly worth more than British crown jewels, were donated by kings and aristocrats in honor of San Gennaro.

The collection has long been considered the property of a local lay council, which was established in the 16th century.

Interior Minister Angelino Alfano, however, issued a decree opening the door to church control.

The minister ruled that the council is the same as any other caretaker body which manages religious buildings - such as Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome - and ordered that four of the committee's posts should be in the hands of the church.

The council said it would appeal the decree in court and further protests would be held in a bid to get it reversed.

Mayor Luigi De Magistris of Naples said the city would do what it takes to "makes sure what San Gennaro gave us is not diminished."

The mayor also heads the council.

The blood of St Januarius liquefied in the presence of a pope for the first time since 1848 on Saturday.

The blood of the patron saint of Naples, which is normally solid, partially liquefied after Pope Francis kissed the relic during his day trip to the southern Italian city.

Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe of Naples showed the vial to the congregation in the city's cathedral, saying: "The blood has half liquefied, which shows that St Januarius loves our Pope and Naples."

Pope Francis responded: "The bishop just announced that the blood half liquefied. We can see the saint only half loves us. We must all spread the word, so that he loves us more!"

The blood last liquefied for a pope in the presence of Pius IX.

The phenomenon did not occur when St John Paul II visited Naples in 1979 and when Benedict XVI visited the city in 2007.

St Januarius was a Bishop of Naples who is believed to have been martyred around the year 305 during the Diocletian persecution.

His blood is kept in a sealed glass ampoule and traditionally liquefies three times a year.

Speaking in Naples, Pope Francis warned priests and religious against living too closely attached to money.

The pontiff has also decried what he called a "terrorism of gossip" in Church circles.

He again spoke out against what he has termed "ideological colonisation" of the family, identifying particularly gender theory as "an error of the human mind".

Addressing members of the mafia directly, Francis said: "I humbly, like a brother, repeat: Convert to love and to justice! Let yourself be found by God's mercy. Know that Jesus is looking for you to embrace you, kiss you and love you."

During his trip to Naples, Francis also met for lunch with 90 prisoners from two nearby institutions, including 10 from a prison ward for transgender and gay prisoners and those who suffer from AIDS.

The blood of St Januarius liquefied on September 19, his feast day, in the repetition of a familiar miracle in Naples in Italy.

The saint and martyr is the patron of Naples.

A vial of his blood, preserved by the faithful since the 4th century, regularly turns into liquid form on his feast day.

Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe of Naples, who presided at a traditional ceremony in the cathedral, told a large congregation that the miracle had been repeated.

"St Januarius is alive in his blood," said Cardinal Sepe. "And he loves Naples."

Cardinal Sepe said that there would "soon be an announcement that will shake the cathedral".

Il Mattino, a local newspaper, speculated that Cardinal Sepe will soon announce a papal visit to Naples.

Many residents of Naples believe that if the saint's blood does not turn to liquid form, it is a sign that some tragedy will befall the city.
