A man is in hospital with serious injuries after he was beaten up at an Auckland mosque.

Haider Lone, immediate past president of the NZ Muslim Association and administrator of the Avondale Islamic Centre, says he fears for his life as he believes the attack was an assassination attempt.

Police were involved in a meeting between two Mosque factions on Tuesday. The meeting was between board members of an Auckland Islamic centre and supporters of a Salafist imam whom they have banned from the mosque.

The NZ Muslim Association, which runs the Avondale Islamic Centre, has accused Sheikh Abu Abdullah and his supporters of trying to take over the mosque.
