As part of a parish fundraiser, a priest in Texas, Father Brian Guerrini, recently walked 34 miles from Sacred Heart in Edinburg to the Queen of Peace Church in Harlingen.

Guerrini began the walk at 5:30am and hoped to be in Harlingen by 4pm but he arrived a few hours earlier than that.

The run/walk event was part of an event the parish is conducting to raise money for the Pacific Regional Seminary in Fiji. So far they have collected about $1,000.

Guerrini said the parish does not have any particular goal in mind as to how much they want to collect.

"Whatever we can raise, we'll send," Guerrini said.

The Queen of Peace parish is located in the Diocese of Brownsville, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley.

The parish was founded by the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (the Picpus Fathers) in 1967.

Some members of the Congregation are studying for the priesthood at the Pacific Regional Seminary.

Guerrini was a member of the founding Picpus formation community in Fiji when it began in 2015.

He has been at Sacred Heart since February 2016 and will be leaving next month for a new assignment in Tonga.

Guerrini said he wanted to do something meaningful before he went.

He has participated in many races in the past including an ultra marathon that was a 70-mile race through the Appalachian Mountains.

A survey has found that the practice of giving money when there is a family fa'alavelave is places huge burdens on young New Zealanders who are ethnic Samoans.

Robyn Lesatale a University of Auckland Pacific studies student surveyed more than 400 Auckland Samoans about the practice.

A fa'alavelave is roughly defined as "anything which interferes with normal life and calls for special activity" such as funerals, weddings, giving of Matai titles, births, special birthdays, and opening buildings.

Lesatale says many had to get loans out to cover the cost of giving and this is exacerbated by the financial pressures on many ethnic Samoans living in Auckland.

She says most took a lot of pride in fa'alavelave but she thinks it may die out if it is not brought back to its true cultural meaning.

"We should really look at fa'alavelave through a Samoan perspective and should emphasis it's about love about family."

Some respondents described the practice as being used as a kind of social boasting and as being out of control.

Ms Lesatale says people in the community felt under pressure to give more than they could afford.

Most of those surveyed were full Samoans who lived in New Zealand and were first generation.

They were mainly from South Auckland and between the ages of 19 to 35.

"It's part of our culture, part of our identity the love and respect we get from our parents, it's an obligation that encourages a sense of community and reciprocity," says Leatale.

But she says the practice can be a huge financial burden with some extended families giving up to $10,000 to a grieving family.

Last week saw the New Zealand debut of The Funding Network, which reverses the popular Dragons' Den show format by inviting charities to take the stage and pitch for cash from audiences.

Donors then decide who to support and how to follow their chosen charity's progress.

Founder Frederick Mulder agreed the style of the events was like reality TV show Dragons' Den, "only our dragons are friendly".

Tuesday's opening night in Auckland raised $68,000 for four groups - hospital clowns, environmental education teachers and two services helping disadvantaged Maori communities. Continue reading
