A group of Mercy sisters has been honored by the New Hampshire Coalition Against the Death Penalty for the key role they played in making New Hampshire the 21st state in the country to abolish the death penalty.

Sisters Eileen Brady, Mary Ellen Foley and Madonna Moran received the recognition on behalf of their community at a celebration in Concord June 22.

The New Hampshire Sisters of Mercy have long played an active role in opposing the death penalty. In December 1997, they adopted a "Corporate Stand Against the Death Penalty" and since then many sisters have served on committees, petitioned legislators, written letters to newspaper editors, testified at legislative hearings, participated in rallies and prayer vigils and prayed that the death penalty would be replaced by restorative justice. NZ Gardener Magazine Awards has named Sister Rosemary Revell as "Best Vege Gardener" for 2012.

She is now one of 10 finalists for the overall prize of New Zealand's top gardener. This is decided by public vote.

"As far as I am concerned any prizes would go to the garden and to help others start their own gardens at home. If we do make it we could have garden set-up kits for all those who join Bridget's gardening classes and garden set-up programme," says Sister Rosemary.

Sister Rosemary is one of three sisters at Papatuanuku ki Taurangi (Earth Promise), at Ellerslie in Auckland, New Zealand.
The garden is described as "a place for teaching and learning as well as providing food. It is based on permaculture and organic principles, and is designed as a place of beauty. Hospitality is core and whoever comes is welcome. We have had many celebrations, and partnered with others who share this site".

Early this year, I had the best holiday of my life when the Sisters in New Zealand invited me to join them for two celebrations, one in Auckland and the second in Samoa. The occasion was the forty years of Mercy ministry to schools and clinic in that small country. For me the whole experience was like a retreat because I had time to revisit the places where I had been for fifty years. I spent most of the time at St. Mary's where the first celebration took place. One month later we celebrated in Samoa.

It is difficult to find Samoa on a map of the world because it is small. However to the people who live there it could have been "the Garden of Eden". Things grow easily and no one needs to be hungry but ready cash is scarce. It was governed by New Zealand for some years so Samoans speak English and Samoan.

One hundred and fifty-four years ago the French Marist priests arrived in the very important village of Leulumoega. There they established the Catholic Church and built up the parishes with the help of the catechists. To mark the Jubilee of the Church its status was changed to that of a Minor Basilica and the buildings were upgraded. Now it is beautiful with new stained glass windows some done by local artists. After a 133-year unbroken association with Hokitika, the Sisters of Mercy are to withdraw from the town.
Sr Mary Cosgrove is the sole remaining resident at the Sisters of Mercy House, in Stafford Street behind St Mary's Church, but with the house up for sale she is due to move to Canterbury once it sells.
Sr Mary spent 18 years in Hokitika, from 1975 to 1984, before moving to Ashburton as a pastoral education assistant, but she said she felt a calling to come back to Hokitika two and a half years ago.
"I principally came here as a support person for Sr Eulalie Martini, who died earlier in the year at 102 years."

This coming Sunday, 14 June Nga Whaea Atawhai o Aotearoa Sisters of Mercy New Zealand are celebrating 150 years in the Wellington and Palmerston North dioceses. It all began with two professed Sisters and a postulant who came in 1861 from Auckland following a request from Bishop Viard to Bishop Pompallier.

Over the years 510 women have given their lives to God as Mercy Sisters in this area. The Sisters have started 43 schools and staffed many others as well. They have cared for the sick in their homes and in makeshift hospitals during the 1918 Influenza Epidemic as well as in Mater Misericordiae Hospital (later Mercy Hospital) in Palmerston North. Caring for children in need has also been to the fore.

Congregation Leader, Anne Campbell rsm says the event is a chance "to wrap our memory cloak around us, and to slip into the folds of a precious legacy. This is a time to bow our heads in gratitude and to raise them to welcome new horizons of Mercy today."

Celebrations take the form of a celebratory meal on Sunday, a cemeteries' visit on Monday (weather permitting) and a Thanksgiving Eucharist in Sacred Heart Cathedral, Thorndon at 6.30pm on Tuesday to which all are invited.
