Gray died on Friday after a long illness.

Gray served as Vicar General to Te Pihopa o Aotearoa for 10 years.

He was suspended as Bishop of Te Waipounamu in February after controversial comments about the Holocaust. The suspension was lifted the week of his death. Read more

Controversial Anglican, Bishop John Gray, says he can offer a Christchurch family, who sought refuge in a church to avoid deportation to Chile, a home within his church's grounds.

The Ravet family have lived in New Zealand for 11 years, but the parents' work permits have expired, and they face deportation to Chile.

The Anglican Church has demoted the bishop who offended visiting Jews and Muslims at an inter-faith meeting last month.

A statement issued by the Anglican Church of Aoteoroa said Archbishop Brown Turei, the head of Pihopatanga, (the Maori Anglican Church in Aotearoa New Zealand) had appointed Bishop Te Kitohi Pikaahu as his Vicar General.
