A video has gone viral of a man who claimed to be a Christian pastor locking himself in a cage with three lions to demonstrate he has the same divine protection as the Old Testament prophet Daniel had.

"Pastor Daniel brought his church members to show them that nothing can happen to a man of God," a Nigerian blogger wrote on Instagram.

In the short film, a man in a blue suit can be seen playing with the lions, at one point putting his hand inside the mouth of one of them.

However, the BBC has investigated the veracity of the story by using a reverse image search. They found a news story on YouTube from 2021 filmed at a tourist park in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, in which an enclosure matched that holding the lions in the viral video. Read more

According to the Rev. Mike Atkins, humour has the power to heal and provide relief in our dark world. He shares that he grew up attending a church where humour was not encouraged and the atmosphere was always serious. However, he later realised that God does indeed have a sense of humour.

To prove this point, Atkins invites us to look at certain animals with fresh eyes, such as the elephant, rhinoceros, duckbilled platypus, penguin, octopus and proboscis monkey. They are all unique and amusing in their own way. Read more

Associate professor Siouxsie Wiles, known by many as the pink hair science lady, warns that the Genesis II Church of Health and Healing is peddling a disinfectant they claim can cure 99% of all illnesses including COVID-19.

"And before you think we are immune to this in New Zealand, according to their website, we have two "chapters" of the Genesis II Church of Health and Healing."

She says both websites state that they have the Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS) available."

The US leader of the church, Archbishop Mark Grenon, claims he wrote to President Donald Trump about its "sacramental cleansing water" days before Trump's infamous press conference in which he suggested injecting disinfectant as a potential coronavirus cure.

In the United States, The Food and Drug Administration has been trying to stop Americans from drinking the "miracle cure" for years.

So the people selling it established their own "non-religious church", the Genesis II Church of Health and Healing.

They say they it was formed for the purpose of serving mankind and not for the purpose of worship.

The call their miracle cure their "sacrament."

Being a "church' gave them protection under the freedom of religion laws to claim "God-given, unalienable rights to maintain and control their personal health."

But on 1 May A federal judge in Florida has granted an order against Mark Grenon and the Genesis II church to stop all distribution of MMS immediately, the church's branded disinfectant chlorine dioxide.

In 2014, their leader, "archbishop" James Humble came to New Zealand.

He presented a three-day, US$500-a-head ($646) seminar in Ngatea on the Hauraki Plains.

At the time, Humble and his church were touting MMS as a cure for the Ebola.

MMS is made by reacting sodium chlorite with a weak acid such as citric acid.

When mixed they produce chlorous acid which degrades to chlorine dioxide and then eventually to chloride ions

Rose Labone's article in the June edition of North and South investigated the activities in New Zealand of a cult known as Providence.

She says it has infiltrated university campuses, schools and mainstream churches in New Zealand under the guise of being a Christian movement.

It also uses the names Nikau Church, Christian Gospel Mission and Jesus Morning Star.

Providence was founded in 1978 by Jung Myung-Seok, now 73, known by members as "Joshua."

Jung Myung-Seok claims to be the second coming of Christ.

But he has spent the past ten years in jail in Korea after being convicted of rape.

Reverend Dr Carolyn Kelly works as a chaplain at the University of Auckland. She told Labone that Providence was "recruiting under my nose."

After becoming aware of the presence of the cult in the university, Kelly began following Providence through social media.

She found social media associated with the group was used for recruitment, with special language for young members. It refers to teenagers as "shining stars" and younger children as "milky ways."

Kelly also talked to ministers at local Presbyterian and other mainstream churches and discovered they were having a problem with Providence "recruiters" operating in their congregations.

The cult members are known to have infiltrated a Wellington high school, and Victoria and Massey Universities, by presenting to assemblies and setting up dance, sports and modelling groups.

In Auckland, the sect ran a dance group called Make Wings Dance for children as young as three.

The Providence-run "Kotuku Models" operated in New Zealand for several years but is now defunct.

Labone said that over the months of her investigation into Providence's New Zealand activities, she put questions to the church leadership several times.

Providence declined to answer specific questions about their operations in New Zealand, their recruiting methods and leader Jeong Myeong-Seok.
