Some churches are more than just buildings; they are symbols of greater realities. They are important not just to believers, they represent the lives, hopes and aspirations of a whole people.

That is why the decision not to rebuild the Christchurch Cathedral "makes a profound statement about the entire city's future", says Chris Trotter

"Those shattered stones are more than fallen masonry; they represent everything else that the earthquakes destroyed," he says.

Trotter believes that even though the Cathedral is owned by the Anglican Church it "belongs" to us all. "What does that say about us? Why aren't more New Zealanders willing to join with the thousands of Cantabrians who marched on Saturday to save Christchurch Cathedral?" he asks
