When people find their voice, it is incredibly powerful and healing for them, says Alyssa Poole "It's the cheapest therapy you'll ever get."

Being able to help someone re-discover their singing ability was what Poole loved most about her job. At the moment she has about 25 students on her books.

"If you're a teacher you love to see people learn and love to see that lightbulb going on," she said.

She also believed the health benefits of singing were underestimated.

Better core strength, increased lung capacity and a boost in confidence were among them, Poole said. Continue reading

Music has been a constant in Waipukurau nonagenarian Pam Hewitt's life, but last month she set down her song sheet and resigned from the St Mary's Church Choir of which she had been a member for 79 years.

"I was hoping to hold out until September next year when it would have been 80 years, but I had quite a bad fall," said the 94-year-old, who now resides at Woburn Home, and whose memory is sharp as a pin when recalling her early introduction to music.

She first joined the choir in September 1937, at the invitation of Mrs Bryce, the church organist at the time.

Marist Priest and singer/songwriter Chris Skinner performed a joint concert with the Auckland Boys Choir at the Cathedral of St Patricks and St Josephs in Auckland on Saturday. A highlight of the evening was the singing of the 'Sons of Gallipoli'. Fr Chris was joined by the choir and Thomas Scott, a choir member, on trumpet playing the last post. The acoustics and lighting were particularly memorable in such a beautiful setting and the audience appreciated their participation. Proceeds from the evening went to support Christchurch Boys Choir given the difficulties they have experienced since the earthquakes and a DVD of the evening will soon be made available.
