A Filipino lay missionary Ryan Turallo died in a boat tragedy off the Shortland Islands in the Western province of Solomon Islands. Turallo worked as Student Affairs Coordinator at St. John Bosco Senior Technical School in Nila of the Shortland Islands.

A boat carrying 10 people left Gizo for Nila in the Shortland Islands last Saturday morning; it reportedly capsized around midday.

Authorities found Turallo's body was washed ashore at Aleang Village in the Shortland Group.

The death toll stands at three and includes two children. One adult remains missing as of Wednesday. The six other passengers, including a Filipino priest, Fr. Edmund Siguenza, were rescued

Authorities said that the weather in Western part of the country had been very bad over the past few days which may have resulted in the unfortunate incident.

In his letter to Turallo's parents, Gizo Bishop, Luciano Capelli, described Turallo as a "lover of youth, life, with dreams and plans for himself, his loved ones and the youth entrusted to him."
