Christchurch man builds replacement for cathedral single-handedly

A Christchurch man has opened a quirky replacement for the city’s earthquake-damaged Christ Church Cathedral.

Rod Stuart recently finished restoring the outside toilet of a 160-year-old cottage in Sydenham and found its old porcelain pipes were still connected to Christchurch’s sewer system.

Engineer Garry Lovie made an iron cross for the top of the toilet and said it should become the new cathedral, Stuart said.
