It wasn’t a cat in a tree, but it may have been the easiest job ever for the Volunteer Fire Brigade in Havelock in Marlborough.
The tireless team of volunteers answered the wail of the siren, thrust feet in boots, threw on their fire-proof jackets and drove the 450 metres from the fire station to the Anglican Church in town.
With the hard work done, all that was left was to open the church door and free the two tourists who had managed to lock themselves inside.
Havelock brigade chief fire officer Alan Stanford said it was one of those things that happens every now and then.
The tourists had gone inside the church for a look and had closed the door behind them, he said.
” The handle had fallen off the inside of the door. All the fire brigade did was open the door.”
