About 40 pumpkins were smashed outside of United Methodist Church Whitefish Bay Milwaukee last Saturday night. The church was growing the pumpkins as a missions fundraiser through the end of the month. The smashed pumpkins blocked Silver Spring Drive in front of the church, and police responded at 5 a.m. Sunday to clear the roadway.
The pumpkin patch at the United Methodist Church of is an October tradition, with pumpkins of every size and shape. From little orange balls to giant pumpkins selling for up to $40. “$10,000 worth of sales the last couple of years,” said Pastor Wiley Gladney.
“Broken smashed pumpkins all up and down the sidewalk, in the street, across the street,” he said.
Gladney said because of the lost revenue they won’t be able to give as much money to Milwaukee area meal programs as they planned to.
“You might think it’s a harmless prank, but people’s lives are effected by this,” Gladney said.
The previous night, police stopped a 20-year old man chasing down a county bus at 10 p.m. with a pumpkin in tow. The man admitted to stealing the pumpkin from Winkie’s, but the store manager told police he did not want to press charges
