Call for filming of bullying to be outlawed

The head of the Principals’ Association, and Principal of John Paul College in Rotorua has called for the filming of bullying to be made a crimal offense.

“I think perhaps it’s time to take a stick approach, and make this a criminal offence,” Patrick Walsh head of New Zealand’s Secondary Principals Association told ONE News.

“If you can confiscate a phone and prove that a student deliberately took a photo image of a serious physical or sexual assault, then that student would face prosecution in the district court.”

Last week, Sean Punkett, in an interview on NewsTalk ZB challenged Walsh’s postion saying that it was useful to have the kind evidence of bullying that the images caught on mobile phones provided. He further challenged Walsh to report all incidences of bullying to the police.

Walsh modified is position and said that it did depend on how the images, once recorded, were used.
